Our Colonial Homes Services
At Sam Strumph Builders, we build colonial-style homes that combine traditional charm with lasting strength. Expertly crafted, these homes are designed for elegance, function, and family living.
Classic Living, Timeless Appeal
Colonial homes are known for their symmetry, character, and warmth. We take this classic style and refine it with today's standards, delivering homes that are as durable as they are beautiful.

What Building a Colonial Home Involves
A colonial is the house most people picture when they think of New England: a rectangular two-story body, a centered front door, windows set in balanced pairs on either side, and a roof ridge running the length of the house. That simple, stacked form is one reason the style has lasted in Maine for so long. It encloses a lot of floor area under a compact roof and a small foundation footprint, it sheds snow well, and it keeps bedrooms upstairs and living space downstairs in a way that still suits families.
When we build a colonial, the work follows the same four steps as every home we take on: consultation and planning, design and customization, construction, and a final walkthrough before we hand over the keys. In the planning stage we look at the lot first, because a colonial's long, symmetrical front wants to face the street or the view squarely, and the garage placement (attached to the side, set behind a breezeway, or detached) changes how the whole elevation reads.
Traditional Outside, Built to Today's Standards Inside
The exterior of a colonial is about proportion: the spacing of the windows, the depth of the eaves and the trim, the width of the corner boards, the shape of the front entry. Getting those details right is what separates a colonial that looks settled on its lot from one that looks like a box with shutters. The interior is where you get to depart from tradition. Many families today keep the formal front rooms but open the back of the house into one kitchen, dining and family space, add a first-floor office or mudroom, and put the laundry upstairs by the bedrooms.
Underneath the traditional look, a new colonial is built to Maine's statewide building and energy code, which is based on the International Residential Code and the International Energy Conservation Code. In practice that means footings set below the frost line, a well-insulated and air-sealed shell, and mechanical ventilation, all of which matter in a climate with long heating seasons and heavy snow. With more than 30 years in construction and home heating, we plan the heating system with the house instead of fitting it in afterward.
What Shapes the Cost and Schedule
Most colonial builds take 8 to 14 months. The variables are the ones you would expect: the size of the house, how much site work the lot needs (ledge, slope, a long driveway, a well and septic system versus public water and sewer), the level of finish inside, and custom exterior details such as a farmer's porch or a carriage-house garage. We give you a detailed estimate and timeline during planning so there are no surprises.
If you like the classic look but want a more open, flexible plan, compare this page with our custom home building process, where the floor plan starts from a blank sheet. If a cleaner, more modern exterior appeals to you, see our contemporary homes. And if you already own an older colonial that needs more room, our home additions and in-law suites are built to match the original house. We work from Gorham across Southern Maine, including Westbrook, Windham, Standish, Buxton, Scarborough, Saco, Portland, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Cumberland and Yarmouth.
